From March 2017 to September 2017, I was privileged enough to be a Special Intern at Mirima Dawang Woorlab-gerring Language and Culture Centre in Kununurra, Western Australia. There I was able to work with the traditional landowners to document, maintain, and revitalize their language, Miriwoong. Part of my task while I was there was to use my publishing expertise to publish a dictionary of the Miriwoong language for the general public. This involved reformatting the Toolbox-generated dictionary file for InDesign, copy editing the dictionary text, designing a cover, and organizing a printer.
Miriwoong Woorlang Yawoorroonga-woorr: A Miriwoong Lexicon for All was launched in September 2017. To obtain a copy of the dictionary, see MDWg’s site. Check out the Kimberley Echo‘s coverage of the dictionary launch here.
Following the publication of the dictionary, I was named Publications Officer (in a remote capacity) to oversee the publication of several more books in Miriwoong, including an alphabet book, a cooking book, and early readers to be used in the Miriwoong Language Nest program, all of which are in-progress!
